The Beatles reached the peak of fame in the 1960s and are considered the most influential act of the rock-and-roll era. Their original sound is a mix of 1950s rock-and-roll, beat and skiffle, but the band experimented with different sounds later in their career, from psychedelia to pop, hard rock and Indian music.

After releasing their first hit “Love Me Do” in 1962, the band gained the nickname “The Fab Four.” Beatlemania grew over the next year in Britain, and the band gained international fame by 1964. Throughout their career, The Beatles released innovative records, including Revolver, Rubber Soul, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Abbey Road and The Beatles.

The Beatles would break up in 1970, but members enjoyed successful solo careers. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are still musically active. George Harrison died of lung cancer in 2001, and John Lennon was shot in 1980.

The best-selling band of all time, The Beatles have sold more than 800 million albums worldwide. In the UK, they have more number-one albums and have sold more singles than any other act. They are also the best-selling artist in the United States, selling 178 million units.

The band holds the world record for having the most number-one hits on the Hot 100 chart – 20 in total.

Throughout their career, The Beatles have won 15 Ivor Novello Awards and 7 Grammy Awards, including Best Original Song Score. The band entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. Four members were inducted individually between 1994 and 2015.

In 2014, the band was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. They were also included in Time magazine’s list of 100 most influential people of the 20th century.
